Retainers – Why You Shouldn’t Skip Wearing Yours

By Gemstone Orthodontics August 10, 2026

You’ve completed your orthodontic journey – the braces are off or your aligner treatment is

done, and your new smile looks amazing. But before you toss your retainers aside and forget

about them, here’s a critical truth: your retainers are just as important as your braces.

Why Retainers Matter

Orthodontic treatment doesn’t end when the brackets come off. Teeth have a natural tendency

to shift back to their original position – a process called orthodontic relapse. That’s where

retainers come in. They “retain” your teeth in their new, corrected positions, giving your bone

and gum tissue time to stabilize around them.

What Happens If You Don’t Wear Your Retainer?

Skipping your retainer for even a few nights can cause noticeable changes. Over time, teeth

may become crowded or gaps may reopen – and unfortunately, these changes don’t fix

themselves. You may need to restart treatment to correct the shifting.

Here are some common consequences of skipping your retainer:

  • Crowding returns – especially in the lower front teeth
  • Shifting bite – leading to discomfort or functional issues
  • Wasted investment – undoing the time, effort, and money you’ve spent
  • Re-treatment needed – which may mean aligners or braces… again

How Often Should You Wear It?

Every patient is different, but here’s a general guide:

  • First few months post-treatment: Wear your retainer full-time for first few months, then transition to nighttime wear.
  • After the first year: Nighttime wear is typically recommended for life. Think of it likebrushing your teeth — a long-term habit for a healthy smile.

Caring for Your Retainer

  • Keep it clean – rinse with cool water and brush gently with a soft toothbrush.
  • Store it properly – always in its case, never in a napkin or your pocket!
  • Keep it safe – pets love to chew on them, and replacements can be costly.
