As the school year kicks off, students are adjusting to new classes, activities, and routines. For those wearing braces, it’s also important to make sure oral care stays on track—even with a busy schedule. With the right habits and preparation, your child can keep their smile healthy and treatment on schedule all year long.
1. Pack a Braces Care Kit
Encourage your child to keep a small kit in their backpack with:
- A travel toothbrush & toothpaste
- Floss picks or interdental brushes
- Orthodontic wax (for any poking wires)
- A small mirror
This makes it easier to freshen up after lunch or handle any minor discomforts during the school day.
2. Choose Braces-Friendly Snacks
Avoid sticky, chewy, or crunchy foods that can damage brackets and wires. Great school-friendly options include:
- Cheese sticks
- Soft fruits (banana, berries, melon)
- Yogurt
- Sandwiches on soft bread
3. Stay Consistent with Oral Hygiene
Brushing after lunch is ideal, but if that’s not possible, encourage a good rinse with water until brushing is possible. Remind your child to:
- Brush at least twice daily for 2 minutes
- Angle the brush around brackets and wires
- Floss daily to remove plaque between teeth
4. Don’t Forget a Mouthguard
For students involved in sports, an orthodontic mouthguard is essential. It helps protect braces—and more importantly, their teeth—from injury.
5. Keep Appointments on Track
Busy school schedules can make it easy to forget orthodontic visits.
